Pieces signed Briand were produced by the Le Verrier foundry during the deco years - ie. the famous bird lady and hoop lady, and I believe that there may have been a connection between Briand and Marcel Bouraine and the former may have been a pseudonym used by Bouraine, who already used another pseudonym - Derenne.

He based many works on the ballet and theatre, one particular theme being the Ballet Russe, from which resulted “the Russian dancers” depicting Nijinsky and Ida Rubenstein in that ole in Scheherazade. Like many artists he had a particular gift for portraying children and this work in his field depicts a whole range of childish pursuits. He became one of the most prominent sculptors in Germany and was for many years under special protection from the Duke of Saxe-Gobung-Gothar who gave him large orders for many monuments. The sculptor lived in the society of prominent actors and under this influence created many well known works such as Snake Dance and Bacchanal. Many of his earlier works were to be found in the salons of the Germany royal courts and a few of the most beautiful were purchased by the late king of Bulgaria. It is impossible that the confusion between figures by this artist and preiss is due to the fact that there work is similar in a great many respects, which In turn may well be due to sharing a studio in Berlin.
Preiss. Johann Phillip Ferdinand Preiss. Born in Erbach Odenwald 13 February 1832. Many of the works by Preiss have the monogram PK embossed on the bronze and this shows that it was produced by the firm of Preiss and Kassler. Walter Kassler and Ferdinand Preiss founded the firm in 1906 in Berlin and it continued to flourish until the death of Preiss. It has been established that Preiss designed and worked on all his models and had many sculptors who worked for him. In this way he was able produce many works though, as will be appreciated due to the numbers of each model it was impossible for him to make each item entirely, even though many are signed by him. It is presumed that each sculptor executed a particular component of each figure and that the various parts were assembled, in many cases by preiss.
Verschnieder. Jean Verschnieder. Born in Lyons. Studied under Jalbiert. Received many awards from the Salon including a mention in 1909.
